The Mother of Humanity™

From the ruins of the 1992 Los Angeles rebellions came the idea for a "monument to peace". Nijel, the artist, sculptor and President of Nijart International says "I recognized the common bonds between the African and Asian communities. I created a symbol which quickly became more global in scope". The initial concept soon evolved as the artist recognized a greater meaning for the monument as a symbol for international peace. Then, in the summer of 1995, the monument was introduced to Teryl Watkins, President of the Watts Labor Community Action Committee (WLCAC). Plans soon got underway to establish on the WLCAC site, the first, and only North American location for the monument's massive sixteen foot bronze figure, the stunning Mother of Humanity™ (MoH) monument. With the unveiling of this monument in Watts on Mother's Day, May 11, 1996, it became the most significant landmark and economic stimulant for the district, second only to the Watts Towers.
